Graham Thompson

As a member of Cleveland Police for over 30 years, 20 of which were as a Crime/Fire Scene Investigator, dealing with major crimes and forensic awareness training for Cleveland Police and Fire Brigade, Graham brings extensive experience to the Forensic Pathways team.

During this time Graham also held the position of Crime Scene/Fire Investigator with the Cleveland Joint Arson Task Force, with responsibility for the investigation of deliberate fires, collecting photographic and forensic evidence in order to establish origin and cause. He has investigated over 500 deliberate fires and reported on over 30 fatal fire scenes since 2001.

He has played a substantial role in the forensic fire training needs of Police and Fire Officers, and is adept at identifying training needs, designing and delivering training ensuring at all times measurable outcomes for all participants, working within the judicial system and in accordance with the National Competency Framework.

Other areas of work include:

  • Examiner for the Forensic Science Society Diploma in Crime Scene Investigation
  • Assisted in co-ordinating the registration process for the registration of Fire Investigators (CRFP)
  • A member of the Centre for International Forensic Assistance (a non-profit making organisation currently run by the University of Strathclyde)
  • Member of the Organising Committee of the International Fire and Arson Conference 2003, 2004 and 2005 representing Cleveland Police
  • International speaker on issues relating to Crime/Fire Scene Investigation
  • Lecturer on forensic and fire related topics to schools, colleges, universities as a Science and Engineering Ambassador for the organisation SETNET
  • Graham was the first UK Police Officer to be invited by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to attend an Advanced Origin and Cause/Courtroom Techniques Course held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre in Georgia, USA in January 2003. In addition he was the first person from the UK to attend the Advanced Explosives and Recovery Techniques course held by the ATF in Fort A P Hill, Virginia. USA, in August 2004. Graham has also been awarded one Chief Constables and two Deputy Chief Constables Commendations for excellent Forensic investigation work in respect of major crime scenes.
    Organiser of the Dealing with Disasters conference 2006 on behalf of the University ot Teeside and Northumbria University.
